General Dynamics received a $22.2 billion contract from the U.S. Navy for 9 new submarines.
The company's Electric Boat subsidiary will manufacture the Virginia-class submarines.
Electric Boat has more than 17,000 employees in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
The fast-attack submarines will have advanced weapons capabilities and expanded capacity.
Construction will begin this year, but the subs won't be delivered until 2025.
Electric Boat makes two submarines per year. The new order will help cut costs and plan ahead.
Delivery timelines used to be 88 months, and they only made one sub per year.
The timeline has been cut to 68 months, and they make two.
They can dive 800 feet while carrying advanced torpedoes, missiles and unmanned underwater vehicles.
Delivery timelines have been cut from 88 months for one sub, to 68 months for two subs.
