Taipei, June 9 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) said Tuesday that if it builds a production plant in the United States, it will invite downstream Taiwanese manufacturers to do likewise.
TSMC, the world's largest pure wafer foundry operator, said in May that it intends to build a 5-nanometer chip production plant in the U.S. state of Arizona, but it has not yet finalized the plan, according to TSMC Chairman Mark Liu.
Establishing a presence in the U.S. would allow TSMC to win the trust of American clients, build an advantage in that market, and employ top global talent, Liu said at an annual shareholders' meeting Tuesday.
If TSMC constructs the Arizona plant, it will invite downstream Taiwanese manufacturers to set up factories close by so that they can all gain more clients, Liu said.
According to TSMC, it plans to invest US$12 billion in the Arizona project, which will get off the ground in 2021 and begin production in 2024, manufacturing 20,000 wafers per month and employing some 1,600 workers.
The company has already selected a location and is awaiting the approval of the U.S. Congress pertaining to regulations and incentives that apply to the semiconductor industry, Liu said.
On Tuesday, TSMC shares rose 0.31 percent to close at NT$319 (US$10.70) on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
