Driverless taxis to get into public service in Phoenix

Monday, October 12, 2020

After years of research and development, driverless cars are about to enter the mainstream in one southwestern city.

Waymo, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, announced it will begin offering driverless taxi rides for certain consumers in the Phoenix area.

Users of the Waymo One ride-hailing service will be able to take rides within a 50-mile radius of the Arizona city.

Waymo says there will be no attendant on board.

The company is expanding a program it halted due to the pandemic, but its move to offer driverless rides to all customers means an advantage over its competitors: it’s actually yielding revenue, compared to others that are still in the testing phase.

Waymo will use Chrysler Pacifica minivans for the robo-taxi service.

Waymo CEO John Krafcik said Fiat Chrysler has engineered a system that is able to flush air from the vans after each ride.
