The global NAND flash market was still oversupplied in the first quarter of 2021, when the memory ASPs fell about 5% sequentially, according to TrendForce. However, with the supply falling short of demand, NAND flash ASPs and bit shipments are set to rise in the second quarter.
NAND flash bit shipments climbed 11% sequentially in the first quarter, with the shipment growth enough to offset the decline in the memory ASPs, TrendForce indicated. As a result, the market posted revenues of US$14.82 billion in the first quarter of 2021, up 5.1% sequentially, TrendForce said.
The NAND flash market will be undersupplied in the second quarter, with prices for mainstream parts being driven up, TrendForce noted. The worsening shortage of NAND flash device controllers has had a further negative impact on the available storage devices.
On the demand side, meanwhile, clients in the data center segment and enterprise server OEMs have stepped up their pace of component procurement, TrendForce indicated.
Samsung Electronics remained the NAND flash market leader in the first quarter of 2021 with a 33.5% market share, followed by Kioxia with 18.7%. Western Digital, SK Hynix and Micron Technology rounded out the top-5 NAND flash suppliers during the quarter.
