Samsung to switch to LPDDR5X productions

Thursday, November 11, 2021

Samsung Electronics has developed an advanced version of the low-power Double Data Rate 5 (LPDDR5) chip tailored for mobile devices to deliver higher performance at lower power compared to the mainstream predecessor, the Double Data Rate 4 (LPDDR4).

The chipmaker announced on Tuesday that the new dynamic random access memory (DRAM) product named LPDDR5X, which is based on 14 nanometer process nodes, is ideal for data-heavy applications like augmented reality.

“In recent years, hyperconnected market segments such as AI, augmented reality and the metaverse, which rely on extremely fast large-scale data processing, have been rapidly expanding,” said Hwang Sang-joon, senior vice president and head of the DRAM Design Team at Samsung Electronics.

“Our LPDDR5X will broaden the use of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and bring new capabilities to AI-based edge applications like servers and even automobiles.”

The LPDDR5X consumes 20 percent less energy compared to the previous DDR5 used for mobile products, according to the company in a statement.

The memory chip comes with a 16 gigabytes capacity per module.

As the chip industry moves forward a next-generation DDR5 from the DDR4, Samsung has introduced different types of the new standard chip.

It started producing DDR5 (Double Data Rate 5) modules used for PCs last month.
