Apple Inc. has placed on probation its iPhone assembler Foxconn’s India factory amid investigation results that some worker dormitories and dining rooms did not meet required standards.
This follows protests that erupted this month after more than 250 women who work at the Foxconn plant and live in one of the dormitories were treated for food poisoning. According to Reuters, more than 150 were hospitalized.
Last year, Apple put another supplier, Wistron Corp., on probation due to breach of supplier guidelines after a riot erupted at its iPhone-manufacturing facility in Bangalore due to salary disputes. Reuters reported that Apple would not award that company new business until it addressed the way workers were treated.
Foxconn’s India plant is located in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, and employs about 17,000 people. According to Reuters, it was closed on December 18, and there are no announcements yet as to when it will reopen.
