Apple's M1 IC designer jump ship to Intel

Monday, January 10, 2022

Weeks after Apple launched its second generation of its custom designed laptop chips, Intel has hired one of the lead executives overseeing the effort to ditch x86 processors.

In a message posted to LinkedIn Wednesday, Jeff Wilcox said he had accepted a new job at Intel as Fellow, Design Engineering Group CTO, Client SoC Architecture. Wilcox, who did not return a request for comment, said in the post he started in January and will help create system-on-chip designs.

Previously, Wilcox had led Apple’s move away from Intel’s x86 architecture in favor of its own processor designs, following a similar path as its iPhone chips. Apple’s decision led to the launch of its M1 chip in 2020, and two new designs for its Macs last year.

Processors such as the M1 are known as systems-on-chip, which combine several chips into a single package.

Wilcox helped Apple design a security chip called the T2, and worked there for roughly eight years, according to his LinkedIn profile. Wilcox joined Apple from Intel, where he was the lead architect for desktop and laptop chips for three years.

Intel confirmed Wilcox had joined the company. Apple did not return a request for comment.
