Central Electronics Ltd (CEL), a public sector enterprise under the Union Ministry of Science & Technology, has added another feather to its cap by installing a 500kW solar plant in Palli panchayat in Jammu and Kashmir in a record time of just 20 days.

Spread over 6,408 square meters, the plant has been set up to coincide with a visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the panchayat to formally launch a nationwide National Panchayati Raj Day celebrations on April 24.

It will provide clean electricity to 340 houses in the Panchayat, making it the first ‘Carbon Neutral Panchayat’ under the Government of India’s “Gram Urja Swaraj Program”.

A 25-member team worked round the clock to complete the Rs 2.75 crore project. The electricity generated will be distributed to the village, having a daily requirement of about 2,000 units through the local grid power station.

A successful trial run of the Solar Plant was demonstrated to the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences; Minister of State PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh.

The Minister complimented the engineers of CEL and senior scientists and senior officers of the Union Ministry of Science & Technology for the installation of the project in a record time and for making it fully functional.

The Minister was accompanied by Jugal Kishor Sharma, Member of Parliament, and Chetan Prakash Jain, CMD, CEL. A team of around a dozen senior scientists and senior officers from the Union Ministry of Science & Technology were also present at the site during the Minister’s visit.

On the National Panchayati Raj Day, the Prime minister is scheduled to address a gathering including more than 30,000 Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members of Jammu and Kashmir while PRIs from across the country will be connected virtually for the Prime Minister’s address. As part of the celebrations, a mega exhibition showcasing technologies and innovations beneficial for farmers and rural development would also be held at Palli.
