Powertech Technology (PTI) to see memory backend assembly and test business to increase

Friday, June 10, 2022

Memory IC backend specialist Powertech Technology (PTI) is expected to see its second-quarter revenue hit a record high, according to market sources.

Despite some noises on the market suggesting slowdowns in handsets and other consumer devices are dragging down both DRAM and NAND flash prices, PTI has been busy fulfilling orders from its Japan-based client in the second quarter, the sources indicated, adding production at the client is recovering after being hit by material contamination in the first quarter.

The overall orders placed by PTI's main memory customers are poised to boost the backend house's revenue to a record high in the second quarter of 2022, and it has good order outlook for the rest of this year, said the sources.

Strong demand for DRAM and NAND flash memory will also allow PTI to fully utilize its fab capacity in Xian, China in the second half of 2022, the sources indicated. Besides, the easing of memory controller ICs will buoy further its output for SSD and other flash storage devices in the latter part of the year.

In addition, PTI continues to expand its logic IC backend business by grabbing orders from Taiwan-based first-tier IC design houses and also orders for HPC chips from GPU vendors, the sources noted.

Terapower Technologies, a subsidiary of PTI, has also stepped up its deployment in the automotive field through obtaining considerable chip probing orders from Japan-based IDMs, the sources said. Terapower has seen the visibility of orders for automotive chips extended to at least 2023.

PTI has reported revenue of NT$7.84 billion (US$265.7 million) for May 2022, up nearly 7% sequentially and hitting a record high. Revenue for the first five months of this year totaled about NT$36 billion, rising 12.6% from the same period in 2021.
