Micron intends to invest $40 billion in manufacturing expansion taking advantage of U.S. Chip Act

Monday, August 15, 2022

USA can make a tenth of the world’s memory chips, says Micron

Micron intends to invest $40 billion in manufacturing expansion in the US over the next eight years, thanks to its anticipated access to Chips Act money.

Under the Chips Act the US government will pay 25% of the cost of a manufacturing facility.

Micron has just reduced its Q4 forecast and TrendForce has increased its Q3 consumer DRAM m-o-m price decline forecast to 13-18% to be followed by another 3-8% drop in Q4.

Micron says its expanded facilities will start producing silicon in 2025 so the investment could be a classic counter-cyclical industry play.

The company says its investment plans will eventually lead to the US making a tenth of the world’s memory chips.
