Israel-Hamas War Causes Nvidia To Cancel AI Summit

Tuesday, October 10, 2023

Nvidia is calling off a company event due to the war between Israel and Hamas.

The GPU maker was originally scheduled to hold its AI summit on Sunday in Tel Aviv, Israel. But the official website for the event has been updated with a statement announcing the cancellation.

“We regret to inform you that due to the current situation in Israel, we have decided to cancel AI SUMMIT, which was scheduled for October 15th and 16th,” the company wrote.

“Our hearts go out to all those affected by the situation. The safety and wellbeing of our participants are our top priority, and we believe this is the best course of action to ensure everyone's safety,” Nvidia added.

Last month, the company began building hype for the two-day event, noting that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was scheduled to make a keynote. During the summit, the GPU maker also planned on highlighting its latest advancements in generative AI — which has become a huge market for Nvidia, generating billions in additional revenue.

But rather than hold the event in Silicon Valley, Nvidia selected Israel, citing the country's own robust tech sector. “With over 6,000 startups, Israel consistently ranks among the world’s top countries for VC investments per capita,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Over 2,500 developers, researchers, and executives were expected to attend the event, which was supposed to feature over 60 live sessions. It’s unclear if Nvidia plans on replacing the summit with a new event. The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the meantime, Nvidia has told attendees of the canceled AI summit: “If you have made any travel or accommodation arrangements, we recommend contacting your service providers to inquire about their policies.”
