The US aims to be manufacturing 20% of the world’s most advanced logic chips by 2030, says Secretary of State Gina Raimondo (pictured).
“We think our investments in leading-edge logic chips, leading-edge logic chip manufacturing, will put this country on track to produce roughly 20% of the world’s leading-edge logic chips by the end of the decade,” says Raimondo, adding, “today we are at zero.”
“I’m confident the United States can become the home to the entire silicon supply chain for the production of these leading-edge chips — from polysilicon production to wafer manufacturing to fabrication to advanced packaging,” says Raimondo, “this is not ‘build a few new fabs and call it a day.’ It’s soup to nuts, polysilicon to advanced packaging, everything in between, including R&D in the United States.”
Additionally, efforts to maintain trailing edge IC manufacturing were being made.”We were furloughing tens of thousands of workers from car companies for lack of a single legacy chip,” says Raimondo, “we have got to improve the fragility of that supply chain, and we will do that.”
Investments will be targeted,” says Raimondo, “”the point of this programme isn’t to sprinkle a bunch of money out to as many companies as possible.”
