Taiwan to open IC design training base in Prague

Tuesday, April 16, 2024

Taiwan aims to launch operations at its first overseas IC design training base in Prague in September, National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Minister Wu Tsung-tsong (???) said.

The training base, which was planned under the 10-year Taiwan Chip-based Industrial Innovation Program, would hopefully help cultivate about 100 international specialists in the first year, Wu said in a recent interview.

The NSTC initiated the program earlier this year as part of its efforts to enhance cooperation on chip development with other countries.

The budget for the 10-year program is NT$300 billion (US$9.29 billion), with an initial investment of NT$12 billion in the first year, the NSTC has said.

The Prague base and future overseas training centers would help Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing companies that operate in Europe cultivate local IC talent, Wu said.

The Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute run by the NSTC’s National Applied Research Laboratories would on Thursday sign an agreement with Czech Technical University in Prague to set up an office in the Czech capital for the training base, and is scheduled to begin offering courses in September, Wu said.

The training base would be equipped with a dedicated office and the necessary infrastructure, and would work with local universities to provide entry-level IC design training, he said.

However, training on more advanced IC processes would remain in Taiwan, Wu added.
