Apple is reportedly prepping significantly thinner versions of the iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro, similar to the new, super-thin iPad Pro it debuted earlier this month.
In his weekly PowerOn newsletter Sunday, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman says the iPhone 17 will include a new model in its lineup that is much slimmer than the current iPhone. Apple is also working to do the same on the MacBook Pro and Apple Watch. The M4 iPad Pro is meant to be "the beginning of a new class of Apple devices that should be the thinnest and lightest products in their categories across the whole tech industry," he says.
Gurman’s report mirrors a similar report from The Information earlier this week that says Apple is working to slim down the iPhone 17. Gurman did not give a specific timeline for the launch of the thinner MacBook or the thinner version of the Apple Watch (which may be the Apple Watch X for the smartwatch's 10th anniverary in 2025).
It shouldn't be a shock that Apple (or any tech company) is going for a thinner device. When it launched the new iPad Pro in May, it touted the tablet as "the thinnest Apple product ever." Last year's iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max featured the "thinnest borders on iPhone," while the M2 MacBook Air was "the world’s thinnest 15-inch laptop." This year's M3 MacBook Air, meanwhile, "feature a strikingly thin and light design," according to Apple's press release.
Phones may be a different story; the thinner the product, the less room you have for all the things that make it run (like that custom modem Apple is reportedly struggling to develop). Apple likely doesn't want a repeat of the iPhone 4's death grip or iPhones 6's Bendgate.
