Google Maps Finally Brings Speedometer and Speed Limit Info to iPhone, CarPlay

Thursday, July 11, 2024

Google Maps has added speedometer and speed limit warnings on iOS and CarPlay, reports TechCrunch.

While the speedometer might not help most users (since your car’s dashboard already does the job), the speed limit warnings can help avoid some speeding tickets.

According to a Google support page, if the Speed Limits feature is available in your region, its indicator will change colors if you exceed the speed limit, which could serve as a handy visual cue to keep you within the legal limits.

These basic navigation features, which have been available on Android phones since 2019, are now gradually being added to iOS and CarPlay globally, Google tells TechCrunch.

To use the speedometer in the Google Maps app, iPhone users will first need to enable the feature by going to Settings > Navigation > Map display. The speedometer will then appear at the bottom left of their navigation screen.

If you can’t see the option, it’s probably because the feature is not available in your region yet.

Google warns on its support page that its speedometers are “for informational use only” and that “external factors may cause the Maps Speedometer to differ from your actual speed.”

Interestingly, the speedometer is not yet available for Android Auto, notes 9to5Google.
