MediaTek Looks To Make Strides In The AI Markets, Plans To Offer Its Own AI Server Chips Based on TSMC's 3nm Node

MediaTek is one of the chip manufacturers that has been determined to make a stride in the AI markets. In previous reports, the company was said to be building a chip dedicated to the "AI PC" segment in collaboration with NVIDIA, a competitor to the Snapdragon X Elite lineup. However, MediaTek now looks to experiment with the "professional side" of the AI markets as well since a new report says that the firm is developing its own AI server chips, collaborating with the likes of TSMC and ARM to deliver a phenomenal product.

Taiwan Economic Daily reports that MediaTek is now preparing to launch its lineup of AI server chips, which would likely be built upon the ARM architecture. This means that MediaTek might be one of the first firms to offer AI server chips using the ARM platform. Apart from that, it's reported that MediaTek plans to employ TSMC's 3nm process, which means that the firm's offerings would indeed be capable ones. Given NVIDIA's hype in the markets, how would MediaTek compete against existing offerings?

Well, MediaTek's AI server chip won't target the high-end segment of the markets; rather, it will focus on the mid-to-low performance tier. The demand for this particular sector is rising massively, given that several firms are engaging in the AI race, including startups, which don't require top-notch solutions from the likes of NVIDIA. With its low-power architecture, MediaTek expects to attract massive attention from the industry's cloud service providers (CSPs), such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta.

In terms of the production schedule, MediaTek's chip is expected to reach the "tape out" stages by the first half of 2025, with small volume shipments commencing by H2 2024. Mass production is anticipated by 2026, but that is subjective to market demand and the interest in the segment as a whole. MediaTek hasn't been able to showcase an AI-relevant product yet, but given how the company is proceeding, it won't be long before MediaTek emerges as a mainstream chip competitor.
