Qualcomm Pushes AI to Lower-Cost Phones With Snapdragon 7s Gen 3

Thursday, August 22, 2024

AI has been a hot-button topic across industries lately, nowhere more so than in mobile. Top devices like the Google Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S24 are expected to include AI features. Still, AI should be a democratizing force available to the many, not the few (who can better afford it). Thus, Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 Mobile Platform, its latest system-on-a-chip, to promise better things to lower-cost devices—particularly AI. Phones based on the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 will enjoy generative AI tools, broader photo and video capture support, smoother and more immersive gaming, clearer audio, and speedier connections.

Xiaomi is on deck to announce a 7s Gen 3-based phone soon, says Qualcomm. Here's what it can offer thanks to the new chip.

Speed Boost

Qualcomm updated the Kryo CPU to give it more speed compared with the 7s Gen 2. The octa-core chip includes one 2.5GHz prime core, three 2.4GHz performance cores, and four 1.8GHz efficiency cores. These improve performance by 20% while also contributing to a 45% boost in power savings. The Kryo CPU is paired with the Adreno GPU, which Qualcomm claims has jumped 40% in performance compared with the 7s Gen 2. Together with the fine-tuned Hexagon NPU, the chip should deliver 30% better AI while saving an additional 12% in power consumption.

Most importantly for future phone buyers, this means on-device generative AI features that can (not quite) do things like this. Other potential AI tools include functions like multi-language translation, noise cancellation and reduction, and better data from sensors such as microphones.

More Immersive Multimedia

Affordable phones are about to get better cameras, video cameras, and media playback capabilities.

Starting with the camera, the 7s Gen 3 packs a new Spectra image signal processor that supports a wide range of smartphone camera arrangements. For example, it can handle a triple 21MP system, a dual 32MP and 21MP system, or a single 64MP camera, all at 30fps with zero shutter lag. Video capture is limited to 4K30 but can handle 10-bit HEIF capture in HDR/HDR10. Want to record some slow motion? You can snag 120fps at 1080p for one-quarter speed.

The 7s Gen 3 includes the Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec with Bluetooth 5.4 Low Energy, aptX Voice, aptX Lossless, and aptX Adaptive. It also handles spatial audio with head tracking. The GPU means better gaming, with features like variable-rate shading, Adreno HDR Fast Blend for quicker scene rendering, and top-notch codecs like VP9 and H.265.

Keeping You Connected

Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 wouldn't be a Qualcomm chip if it didn't come packed with a bevy of radios. It supports sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G in NSA and SA modes, a power-saving feature when roaming on 5G networks, and multiple SIM cards in 5G devices. Top theoretical cellular download speeds can reach 2.9Gbps. The FastConnect system includes Wi-Fi 5, 6, and 6E in the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands with up to 8x8 MIMO. Enterprise-grade security (WPA3-Enterprise, FIPS 140-2, 256-bit encryption) is built in.

Triple-frequency GNSS/GPS is on board to help with location tracking. This means more accurate details when in urban landscapes and far-flung forests.

Other specs include support for LPDDR5 memory up to 3200MHz, USB-C (v3.1), UFS 3.1 storage, 144Hz displays at up to Full HD resolution, Qualcomm QuickCharge 4+, and RAM up to 16GB.

Qualcomm says phones with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 will reach the market in the months ahead.
