In September, Qorvo released its latest multi-protocol SoC for Matter and smart homes, which the company said combines multi-network support for Matter, Zigbee and Bluetooth Low Energy with “unrivaled energy efficiency” in a scalable turnkey solution.
In order to find out more about the solution, we caught up with Marc Pegulu, the VP and GM for the connectivity systems business at Qorvo, to talk about the new product, the QPG6200L, plus some of the general trends in Matter and smart homes.
We also touch on the company’s product roadmap, early customer wins in areas like lighting, and some of the broader industry opportunities and challenges for Matter-based products—both for the developer and the end-consumer.
The smart home market and Matter
According to IDC, the global market for smart home devices is expected to see global sales of 1.2 billion units by 2028.
In its announcement for the product launch in September, Qorvo said the QPG6200L is its first product based on its new ConcurrentConnect low-power wireless connectivity platform designed to address the challenges of today’s rapidly evolving smart home environment, ensuring seamless communication and interoperability across multiple wireless standards.
The new SoC supports multiple protocols on separate channels simultaneously, delivering high RF performance and reliability for a wide range of consumer IoT applications, including smart lighting, sensors and home hubs. Qorvo added it also leverages a built-in secure element and is PSA Certified Level 2 for enhanced IoT security.
The new QPG6200L is also suitable for low-power applications, such as battery-operated sensors and energy-harvesting devices, since it features what the company said is “an industry-leading” sleep current of less than 1 µA—30% lower than competing solutions.
