Refreshed Asus ROG Zephyrus, Strix Laptops Target Top Gaming Speeds

Wednesday, January 8, 2025

Asus launched an armada of new ROG gaming laptops and desktops across its existing brands at CES 2025. The latest AMD, Intel, and Nvidia components, many of them also debuting at the show, power these new gaming devices.

These updates target the ROG Strix, ROG Strix Scar, and ROG Zephyrus, three flagship laptop lines available in two sizes. In addition, Asus announced updates to its ROG Flow Z13 and XG Mobile (the company's unique gaming-focused 2-in-1 detachable and external graphics box), and it revealed a new ROG G700 desktop. Check out the above video for an exciting first look at many of these products, and read on for a deeper dive on them all.

Slick New 14- and 16-Inch ROG Zephyrus Machines

We’ve reviewed many iterations of these ROG laptops over the years here at PCMag, and with new platforms launching from those three chip makers, another full round will arrive in 2025.

Let’s start with the slimmest systems. Zephyrus is the premium and most portable brand in the ROG lineup, and as before, its new models will have screen sizes at 14 and 16 inches (the Zephyrus G14 and the Zephyrus G16, respectively).

The G14 is consistently one of our favorite portable gaming laptops. The 2024 Zephyrus G14 model was our top pick at this screen size last year, and Asus has stuck with the same design. The new model maintains the aluminum build, the slim chassis, and the diagonal lighting slash on the lid. It measures 0.63 inch thick and weighs 3.46 pounds, with a 14-inch 3K OLED display nestled in its compact frame.

Inside, the G14 packs up to AMD’s new Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor and Nvidia’s next-generation laptop GPUs for up to 100W TGP. Liquid-metal thermal compound and Asus’ tri-fan cooling solution will aim to keep these parts running effectively in such a small space. With its new CPU and feature set, this qualifies as a Copilot+ PC.

The G16 shares many of its features with its smaller sibling. It includes a larger 16-inch OLED screen, is 0.59 inch thick, and weighs 4.3 pounds. Unlike the G14, the G16 can be configured with the latest AMD or Intel processors, not just Ryzen. (It will also feature new-gen Nvidia graphics.)

This laptop's 14-inch variety feels denser than before, and that's clear when lifting it. This added weight could be due to cooling and power upgrades necessary to support the new Nvidia graphics and Ryzen silicon.

Updated Strix and Strix Scar Laptops Bring the Power

Moving on to the Strix, it levels up in size, coming in screen sizes of 16 (the Strix G16) and 18 (the Strix G18) inches. This system focuses more on performance than the Zephyrus, running the latest AMD or Intel processors plus Nvidia’s newest graphics up to 175W TGP.

The displays are 2.5K 240Hz panels with G-Sync support. The chassis is rimmed with Aura RGB lighting, and inside, the system can pack up to 32GB of memory and 2TB of SSD storage, plus easier access for upgrades with a toolless Q-Latch design. Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal and an end-to-end vapor chamber keep the system running smoothly.

Finally, we come to the ROG Strix Scar G16 and G18. This is the most powerful laptop in the group—the last Scar 18 I reviewed was one of the best-performing laptops we tested in 2024. The new models share much in common with the non-Scar Strix but top out all options and only come with Intel processing. They max out with Intel’s latest processors (up to 65W) and Nvidia’s top-end new GPUs (up to 175W TGP). Memory capacity runs up to 64GB of DDR5 5,600MHz RAM and as much as 4TB of storage (via two 2TB SSDs).

The panel is a mini LED 2.5K 240Hz screen with G-Sync support, and it features the same cooling system as the Strix. On the exterior, you’ll also find the Aura RGB trim, plus diagonal, pattern-programmable pinpoint LEDs in a slash across the lid, here showing the word "STRIX." I’m not sure everyone will be especially fond of that last inclusion, especially as it's dubbed "Anime Vision," but it's a blingy canvas for you to customize if that's your thing. Nevertheless, this system makes it clear this is a higher-end model at a glance.

For Very Mobile Gamers, a New ROG Flow

As for the rest of the announcements, the ROG Flow Z13 and ROG XG Mobile comprise a portable gaming and productivity duo. It’s been a couple of years since I reviewed the last Asus ROG Flow Z13, a detachable convertible tablet meant to pair with the XG Mobile external GPU box (which we’ve reviewed before, too).

The new Z13 will run on AMD’s latest processors and use unified memory for faster performance and more integrated graphics acceleration. Its slim, lightweight aluminum chassis should make it a pleasant travel companion, though it's relatively a brick compared with, say, a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. Meanwhile, the CPU and QHD screen should enable real productivity.

If you need more power—either to take with you on the road or when you arrive back at your desk—the XG Mobile is sold separately to deliver discrete graphics performance. Nvidia’s latest-gen mobile graphics chips, not yet detailed at the time of our briefing, will power this new edition.

The XG Mobile connects over Thunderbolt rather than a proprietary connection, is built into a compact case, and has its own vapor-chamber cooling system. While we reviewed the XG Mobile previously, we’ll have to test the new model to gauge its effectiveness and ease of use. It will be a very different beast this time.

Last but not least, Asus also showed off a new ROG G700 desktop. This full-size tower runs on Intel’s latest next-generation processors and Nvidia’s latest graphics. The case features three front-facing vertical RGB fans and a full-side window.

All of these systems promise high-end performance and cutting-edge features, but we’ll have to test these new components to gauge their appeal properly. As units become available, check back for thorough reviews of the latest ROG lineup.
