Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) is shipping a TLC NAND with 294 layers of which 232 are active.
232 is the same as the company’s previous, 4th-generation NAND, which has 253 active layers.
It is uncertain why the company has increased the dummy layers.
Both devices use string stacking.
Hynix holds the record for active layers with 321.
YMTC’s latest device has an equivalent bit density to Hynix at around 20 Gb/mm², says TechInsights, which is below Kioxia’s 22.9 Gb/mm².
