SK Hynix is poised to finalize its acquisition of Intel's NAND business next month. This strategic acquisition, valued at $8.844 billion, marks the largest merger and acquisition (M&A) by a South Korean company, underscoring SK Hynix's ambition to diversify its business portfolio beyond its traditional focus on DRAM. The acquisition is a significant step for SK Hynix as it seeks to expand its footprint in the global NAND market, particularly in the enterprise SSD sector.
The journey began in October 2020 when SK Hynix announced its decision to acquire Intel's NAND business. This move was driven by the company's desire to enhance its market share and capabilities in the NAND sector, a crucial component in the storage solutions market. NAND flash memory, known for its non-volatile storage technology, is widely used in electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and solid-state drives (SSDs).
By the end of 2021, SK Hynix had completed the first phase of the acquisition, paying $6.609 billion and taking over Intel's solid-state drive (SSD) business division. This initial phase laid the groundwork for SK Hynix to integrate Intel's NAND design assets, research and development (R&D), and production facility personnel into its operations. The acquisition also included key assets such as Intel's Chinese factories, which are pivotal for SK Hynix's strategy to accelerate its penetration into the global NAND market.
The acquisition comes at a time when the semiconductor industry is experiencing rapid technological advancements and intense competition. Intel, previously the world's second-largest NAND operator after Samsung Electronics, was a major player in the NAND business. By acquiring Intel's NAND operations, SK Hynix aims to enhance its competitiveness against industry giants like Samsung and Intel, particularly in the NAND and SSD markets.
Last year, SK Hynix's NAND division recorded a historic high revenue of 19.106 trillion won, a significant increase from the 5 trillion won revenue in 2019. This fourfold growth over five years highlights the company's successful expansion in the NAND sector. The acquisition is expected to further bolster SK Hynix's position in the rapidly growing NAND market, leveraging the increasing demand for data storage solutions driven by the expansion of data centers and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
