SpaceX has already discounted Starlink hardware and monthly fees to attract more users. But in a few markets, the company is going even further by offering its Starlink dish for free.
In Italy, the company has reduced the price for the standard Starlink dish from 349 Euros to zero. "Get a Starlink Standard kit for 0 € 349 € in exchange for a commitment to a Residential service plan for at least 12 months," says a translated message from SpaceX.
Starlink.com also shows the deal to users in Australia. Customers will only need to pay for the dish if they cancel, change their address, modify their service plan, transfer their Starlink kit to another user, or fail to pay their monthly bill, a SpaceX support document adds.
This limited deal is SpaceX’s latest effort to drive more growth for Starlink, which has over 5 million users. The satellite internet service has expanded to over 120 markets and is poised to enter India. However, Starlink may face a tougher time attracting customers due to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's controversial views.
Musk’s other major company, Tesla, has experienced declining sales, especially in Europe. In recent months, the billionaire and his businesses have also faced protests and boycotts due to Musk’s support of President Trump and his efforts to drastically cut the federal government staff and spending through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Meanwhile, at least a few independent installers of Starlink dishes in Canada report online insults and even in-person confrontations from consumers upset at the US trade war with the country. Still, some installers say they continue to receive orders for Starlink, which has gained a reputation for outperforming other satellite internet services.
It's unclear if SpaceX will expand the free dish offer to more markets. But in the US, SpaceX has stopped accepting new sign-ups for the residential Starlink plan in several major cities, citing limited network capacity.
