AMD To Collaborate With IBM To Develop ‘Quantum-Centric’ Supercomputing

Thursday, August 28, 2025

Quantum computers, in general, are considered a future venture, mainly since the industry is currently focused on bit-sized computation. However, with the growing demands of AI and the world's need for higher computing power over time, firms like AMD and NVIDIA are rushing to develop an ecosystem around quantum computing. Now, based on a blog post by AMD, it is revealed that the firm is collaborating with IBM to create next-gen computing architectures that support the push towards quantum computers.

The blog post claims that AMD will work with IBM to integrate its high-end EPYC CPUs and Instinct GPUs inside quantum computing environments and, more importantly, allow IBM to deliver quantum computers to the world by the end of the decade. In quantum environments, HPC and AI machines are expected to work together to process information, where different problems are dealt with by the best hardware for them.

Interestingly, IBM already has a form of quantum + classical computer configuration up and running, with the IBM Quantum System Two pairing up with RIKEN's Fugaku supercomputer, to show the potential of the performance brought in by combining classical computers with quantum systems. And, it seems like AMD will play a huge role in how quantum computers shape up, given that IBM is one of the firms that are at the forefront of the race.
