Microsoft to invest $400 Million in India

Tuesday, November 12, 2002 Microsoft said it would invest $400 million in boosting education, business partnerships and software development in India.

Microsoft spokesman said in a statement on the second day of Bill Gates's four-day Indian trip the investment would enable Indian software firms to tap global opportunities in Microsoft's .NET strategy.

The investment, equivalent to 20 billion rupees, will be made over the next three years and will cover education, partnerships, software development and local customization.

Gates said Microsoft would increase to 500 the number of engineers at its software development center at Hyderabad in southern India by 2005, up from nearly 200 at present.

He said the Indian investments would not involve equity stakes in local companies but Microsoft would be a "a significant customer" for product components and software testing.

Some 20 percent of Microsoft's engineers are of Indian origin and Gates said on Monday that he had "a personal concern" toward the nation because of that.
