Taiwan among most competitive nations

Tuesday, November 19, 2002
The Switzerland-based World Economic Forum (WEF) latest survey showed that Taiwan placed third as the most competitiveness nations after the US and Finland the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) said recently.

Vice Premier Lin Hsin I, who serves concurrently as CEPD chairman, said the advancement shows that the efforts made by the government to improve Taiwan's investment environment and promote its economic growth have won international recognition. Taiwan is ranked third by growth competitiveness, up from last year's seventh place and 11th place in 2000.

According to the report, which covers 80 economies around the world, the top 10 in the global growth competitiveness ranking are the United States, Finland, Taiwan, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, Norway and Denmark, while Japan is listed at 13th, Hong Kong is at 17th and mainland China at 33rd place.

"Competitive countries can be expected to return to a sustained growth path faster and earlier than those that are less competitive," the report said. The report is based on a mixture of statistics, public information and surveys of 4,800 business leaders.
