Electronics export increases in Taiwan

Friday, November 22, 2002
Taiwan's electronics suppliers shipped more products in October to customers in the U.S. and Asia on increased demand ahead of the Christmas shopping season.

Exports of notebook PCs, handsets and PDAs (personal digital assistants) surged to a record monthly high, totaling $2.84 billion, up 28.0% from October 2001, Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs said today. Semiconductors, flat panel components, and consumer electronics products rose 12.6% to $2.64 billion during the same period.

The U.S. market was Taiwan's biggest market, accounting for $1.62 billion or 30%, with 14% from Japan, 21% from Europe and 10% from Hong Kong, according to the statement. The former British colony is a way station through which most Taiwan manufacturers deliver their products to mainland China, circumventing a legal ban on direct links between Taiwan and the mainland.

The export numbers suggested that demand picked up from companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell Computer, Cisco Systems, Ericsson and NEC as they prepare for the upcoming holiday shopping season. Taiwan is the world's biggest supplier of PCs, laptops, components and other electronics products.

Looking ahead, however, the growth probably can't be sustained, some analysts said. "We won't be able to see a continuation of the same kind of momentum that we saw last month," said Tony Tseng, an analyst at Merrill Lynch, Taipei. "Demand slows down starting in November" he said, because by then OEMs and distributors would have finished building up inventories for the shopping season.
