Prices on major brand name desktop systems with adequate specifications with a 1.8- or 2-gigahertz processor, at least 128 megabytes of RAM, Windows XP, and a 40-gigabyte hard drive, are priced around or under the $500 mark.
What a bargain. For instance, IBM's NetVista A30p has a price of $599 without the monitor. The HP Pavillion 503N is advertised for $549 with monitor sold separately. But the optical drive is a CD-RW (rewriteable).
