Xecom Inc. introduced a wireless transceiver and access point for remote data acquisition last week. The system uses the 900-MHz ISM band to accumulate data on vending machines and transfer that data through phone lines.
With the new technology, analysts said vending machines would soon carry products beyond the regular Coke and snack bars. It would include products such as Kodak cameras, CDs, eyeglasses and books etc.
Automated vending machines collected some $56.8 billion in revenue worldwide in 2000, according to Vending Times magazine. A wireless monitoring system placed in a fraction of these machines could capture substantial revenues, Xecom said.
The company has constructed a system that consists of the XE 900 smart transceiver and the XE 924 base access point, which links as many as eight remote microcontroller-based systems to a central data collection unit. The data collection unit, in turn, is connected to a telephone landline via a modem (landline is used for security reason especially when credit cards are used).
The wireless portion of the system operates in the ISM band at around 900 MHz and has a range of up to 150 feet indoors. Proprietary software is used to packetize data, provide error correction and insure collision avoidance.
