Macronix and Mitsubishi co-develop flash memory

Wednesday, November 27, 2002 Macronix International has signed an agreement with Mitsubishi Electric Co. to co-operate on the development of so-called DINOR style flash memory on 0.15-micron process technology, the company said in a statement.

The agreement with Mitsubishi covers joint design of product and wafer manufacturing. The process technology has been established at Macronix' Fab-2 200-mm wafer fab and the company began production of flash memories this month.

Macronix said that 128-Mbit and 64-Mbit flash memories for mobile phone applications would be relevant to the agreement, as this business is expected to make a significant contribution to both companies' revenues over the next few years.

Macronix has produced 4-Mbit SRAMs and 32-Mbit DINOR flash memories for Mitsubishi Electronic as a foundry supplier since forth quarter of 1999. With the signing of the agreement the companies would move into a higher level of partnership in both technology and manufacturing, Macronix said.
