Kentron unveiled QBM DDR 400 Module

Thursday, December 5, 2002 Kentron Technologies Inc, unveiled Quad Band Memory (QBM) technology for DDR400 modules, available now for licensing by chip and module makers.

Kentron said it will plan its own initial production of its QBM DDR400 modules starting in the second half of 2003.

QBM uses a special switch within the module to double the bandwidth of memory chips. The QBM DDR400 module will match the 800MHz front side bus of new processors expected to be available in 2H '03, the company said. The modules will operate up to 6.4Gbytes/sec for single memory channels or up to 12.8Gbytes/sec for dual-channel.

Kentron and its licensing partners will also starting production in the first quarter of 2003 for QBM modules using DDR266 memory to match the new 533MHz FSB of processors. Kentron makes the special QBM module switches which is used in its modules and those of licensees. Bob Goodman, Kentron CEO, said the firm licenses its QBM technology on a royalty-free basis, and derives revenues from the sale of its QBM switches.

Eight switches are needed in an unbuffered module. He said for the cost of eight switches at about $15, the module bandwidth can be doubled. STMicroelectronics is the foundry for the QBM switches, Goodman said.
