To win more contracts from medical OEMs, Sanmina-SCI Corp. has agreed to purchase an Israel-based manufacturing and assembly operation.
Sanmina-SCI, a San Jose EMS provider, will expand its presence in Israel under an agreement to acquire Elscint Limited's manufacturing, assembly, engineering and integration facility in Ma'a lot, Israel. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The move marks Sanmina-SCI's second Israel operation. The major contractor runs a manufacturing plant in Petah Tivka that was owned by SCI Systems Inc., prior to its merger with Sanmina Corp. last December. Sanmina-SCI, which has a heavy concentration of communications-related business, has sought to diversify its customer base with high-end medical products.
The new site will become part of Sanmina-SCI's newly formed Medical Systems Division. The Ma'a lot plant makes complex medical systems and other high-end industrial products. The Ma'a lot facility counts GE Medical Systems and Philips Medical Systems among its clients.
Besides its medical operation, Elscint, which is headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel, is involved in hotel development in Central and Western Europe along with investment in several bio-tech companies.
