The TSMC's application to build a semiconductor plant in China is on temporary put on hold as it awaits more information from the chipmaker before final approval is issued.
Ministry of Economic Affairs spokesman, Berton Chiu said: "We must wait until the information is complete before opening the approval meeting." The economic ministry is currently consulting opinions from other ministries, and asking TSMC to provide supplementary information. The TSMC spokesman said the company would follow all requirements if the government required more information or clarifications from the company.
In April this year, many local semiconductor firms asked the Taiwanese government to lift restrictions against investing in China on particular high-tech industry such semiconductor to prevent technology transfer to China. The government has agreed to allow local semiconductor firms to invest in China under two specific conditions. The conditions are the local semiconductor firm must has 12-inch wafer foundry running at full production capacity and only older (8-inch) wafer equipment with 0.25 micro process is allow to move to China facilities.
TSMC has rumor to invest US$898 million semiconductor plant in Shanghai's Songjiang Science Park.
