AMD signs channel partner in Taiwan

Friday, December 13, 2002
Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices yesterday inked a partnership agreement with Taiwan local semiconductor distributor Kuen Chaang Uppertech Corp. aiming to gain a larger slice of the Taiwan domestic flash-memory market.

Joe Krystofik, AMD vice president of South Asia Pacific, said Taiwan is a robust market for memory and other semiconductor products and added to succeed in Taiwan "we need not only state-of-the-art technology and the best service but also the support of our channel partners to help us distribute AMD products in Taiwan." "We're signing an agreement with a high-quality partner. We believe this will be a great partnership," he said at the signing ceremony held in Taipei.

Uppertech, a leading semiconductor channel distributor in Taiwan, will begin receiving AMD flash memory shipments in Q1 next year to distribute to makers of 3C (as consumer, computing and communications) devices. Kenny Chang, president of Uppertech, said he is optimistic the partnership will help AMD increase its market share in the Taiwan flash market, given 3C and other information appliance (IA) products are immensely popular.

Flash memory is used for easy and fast information storage in such devices as digital cameras and home video game consoles. It is used more as a hard drive than as random access memory and the company has a winner in its hands with its MirrorBit technology that allows a Flash memory device to hold twice as much data as standard Flash without compromising device endurance.
