Worldwide DRAM revenues will reach US$16.2 billion in 2002, a 36.7% increase from 2001, according to a report released by Gartner Dataquest research firm.
Samsung Electronics strengthened its position as the top DRAM supplier, increasing its market share to 31%. Micron Technology and Hynix Semiconductor saw their market shares drop in 2002, but held onto their rankings as the distance number two and three vendors, respectively.
"Samsung had an exceptional year, and contrary to its rivals, it managed to make a profit throughout the year strengthened by its high exposeure to premium price products, such as Rambus and DDR SDRAM,¡¨ said a Gartner Dataquest analyst.
Infineon Technologies saw strong revenue growth in 2002 and increased its market share to 12%, behind Hynix.
Gartner Dataquest analysts said Taiwanese manufacturers had an exceptional year, as they secured 14% of the market in 2002, compared with 8.4% in 2001. Among the Taiwanese manufacturers, Nanya Technology was the big winner, moving up from eighth position in 2001 to sixth in 2002.
Overall, Japanese DRAM vendors had a tough year. Japanese vendors now only control 12% of the market, compared with 21% in 2001, said the company.
