Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. will roll out 3G mobile services sometime next year, the company said in a statement. The company has conducted the first public trials of 3G telephony in Singapore.
SingTel has chosen a few for its preferred 3G supplier, Ericsson, Nokia Corp. and a consortium of Siemens, NEC and Itochu Corp.
SingTel, the country's largest telecommunications operator, was awarded one of the three 3G licenses awarded in April 2001. Like many other carriers in the region, it has been cautious about moving ahead with introducing 3G, citing a lack of quality handsets and compelling applications.
