Intel Licenses Hyper-Threading to SiS

Tuesday, December 24, 2002 Intel has licensed its Hyper-Threading technology to Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS), according to SiS' Web site.

While neither company has released a statement regarding the licensing deal – one which would mark the first third-party vendor to gain rights to the highly touted Intel technology – SiS' site claims that the Taiwanese company has optimized Hyper-Threading technology for five of its Pentium 4 chipsets.

The chipsets include SiS' SiS648, SiS645DX, SiS651, SiSM650 and its Rambus DRAM-based SiSR658.

SiS could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile an Intel representative said he was unaware of the agreement, but that it may be covered under an existing contract with SiS.

One related agreement between the two companies came in March 2001, when Intel licensed its Pentium 4 core logic chipset to SiS in hopes of speeding the adoption and availability of P4 processors.

Intel introduced the Hyper-Threading technology, which enables one processor to act like two and provides about 25 percent more performance across the board, in November.
