Oki Electric plans to triple the scale of its semiconductor foundry business to a 30 billion yen operation by fiscal 2005 by increasing foundry-related personnel and revamping production facilities to produce high-performance products.
Oki Electric aims to boost production work subcontracted by outside firms as a means of strengthening semiconductor-manufacturing operations, which have been spun off into a separate internal company.
To achieve this end, Oki Electric has integrated foundry-related sales and marketing into a consolidated unit and nearly doubled the staff to 20, with plans to expand staffing to 30 in April. It also plans to better match client production processes with its own by increasing technical staffing from 10 engineers now to 15 by April.
The company plans to improve the facilities at its Miyazaki Prefecture foundry by bringing in equipment designed to handle 150mm wafers and support 0.35-micron to 0.5-micron processes from a plant in Miyagi Prefecture.
The foundry's current equipment, which is designed to handle 125mm wafers and support 0.8-micron to 1.5-micron processes, will be moved to the Miyagi facility.
