What tech segment will recover first? Computer engineers say it will be, well, computers.
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) also say that Moore's Law can stay on track another five to 10 years.
According to a survey of IEEE fellows, those working in the computer industry predict their segment will be first out of the current economic slump.The IEEE bestows the fellow label on individuals with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in the institute's fields of interest. There are currently 6,011 IEEE fellows out of the roughly 385,000 IEEE members.
The first ever survey of IEEE fellows indicated that those in the computer industry were 20 percent more positive than those fellows on the whole in forecasting their industry to recover first. IEEE fellows in the semiconductor industry closely followed their computer compatriots in calling for their industry to bounce back first.
All IEEE fellows were collectively more positive on their own respective industry rebounding first from the technology slump. Overall, though, 49 percent of survey respondents said the computer industry would recover first, followed by 43 percent who predicted semiconductors, followed by 44 percent for energy and 38 percent for telecom.
The survey, published in the January issue of IEEE Spectrum, also found that IEEE fellows feel technology can assist energy development, the fight against terrorism and environmental protection. The survey also found that: 52 percent believe that Moore's Law will continue another five to 10 years; 85 percent agree that high-caliber students are no longer choosing engineering as a profession because they are able to make more money in other fields; and 90 percent agree that trains and light-rail systems as a form of mass transit can't be developed nor maintained without significant government support.
