Wireless networking hardware supplier Buffalo Technology Inc. is shipping what it claims is the industry's first products based on the 802.11g draft standard.
Austin-based Buffalo today unveiled the AirStation G54 broadband router access point and wireless CardBus adapter.
Based on Broadcom Corp.'s 54g chipset, the AirStation router contains a four-port Ethernet switch and incorporates improved security with multi-session virtual private network pass through support, both IPSec and PPTP, and upgradeable firewall features. The 54Mbits/sec. AirStation is backward compatible, supporting previous 802.11 standards, as well as WPA with TKIP and AES with a future firmware upgrade.
Buffalo's G54 products are available through its distribution relationship with Tech Data Corp. The G54 router will retail at around $199 while the CardBus adapter will sell for around $99.
The wireless LAN market is currently one of the few drivers of market growth for chipmakers. Some analysts predict that 802.11x chipset shipments will triple this year from 2001.
