Consumer Electronics Show attracting more exhibitors

Monday, January 6, 2003 Consumer Electronics Show opens in Las Vegas this week are attracting more techonology companies to showcase their new products.

One example is Creative. For years, the company was an icon at Comdex, the other big Las Vegas trade show that had long been considered the must-attend show for tech companies.

This past November, Creative skipped Comdex, choosing instead to showcase its line of MP3 players and other audio products at CES.

``I think Comdex is where the industry was and CES is where the industry is now and is going to,'' said Creative president Craig McHugh.

McHugh said. ``At Comdex, there was always a push to show technology on a prototype. At CES, you want to show everyone what's available to use now, what started shipping in November or December.''

The show has already registered more than 100,000 people, down from the peak of 120,000 in 2001 but up from last year's 99,000. By comparison, Comdex brought about 125,000 people to Las Vegas in November, about the same as the year before but down from the 200,000 who attended in 2000.

Likewise, the number of exhibitors has shifted. CES will bring 2,040 companies to the show floor this year, up slightly from last year's 2,000. Comdex saw 1,100 exhibitors in November, down from almost 1,700 the year before.

Key3Media, the Comdex organizer that is starting to feel a financial squeeze from shrinking shows, stressed that its show continues to have an impact in the industry even if some of the bigger exhibitors chose hotel suites over show floor space.
