Hitachi and NEC Corp., have asked Intel Corp. to invest in their joint DRAM company, Elpida, according to a Reuters report today.
While the size of a possible investment was not given, $668 million is needed to boost capacity and cut costs at Elpida's new 300mm plant, the report said.
In November 2002 a Hitachi spokesperson said it and NEC would each invest about $182.5 million, for a total of $365 million, to raise Elpida's capital and push reserves.
An Elpida spokesman told Reuters that NEC and Hitachi intend to keep their combined share in Elpida at 51 percent or higher even after the possible capital injection from Intel.
