Elpida Memory, the DRAM joint venture between NEC and Hitachi has signed a five-year outsourcing agreement with China's Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., also known as SMIC.
Elpida will provide SMIC with the technology to manufacture 0.13-micron DRAM, and SMIC will begin production in Shanghai for Elpida in the third quarter of 2003.
SMIC will supply Elpida with 10,000 200mm DRAM wafers monthly in fiscal 2003, and 15,000 wafers monthly in fiscal 2004. Production could rise as high as 30,000 wafers monthly in the future.
Until now, Elpida has sold products made by NEC and Hitachi under its own brand. Its own factory in Hiroshima will start production this month, but it lacks the capacity, leading Elpida to seek another production partner. SMIC has manufactured semiconductor products for Toshiba Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd.
