Samsung Electronics said it planned to invest $813.1 million to upgrade memory chip lines and cope with a gloomy outlook for the depressed semiconductor sector.
The money will be spent on improving existing production lines, and is on top of a $1.2 billion investment in new lines announced two weeks ago.
``We aim to upgrade chip making lines to increase output of DRAM (dynamic random access memory) and flash memory chips,'' the world's top memory chip maker said in a statement.
Of the planned 955.5 billion won ($813.1 million) spending, 206.4 billion won will be used to turn DRAM production lines into flash memory lines, the statement said.
DRAM is the most common type of chip used in computers and electronics products, while flash memory is widely used in mobile handsets and digital cameras. Demand for flash chips is rising, and the switch will allow Samsung to use its lines more efficiently.
