Taiwan officials to discuss Microsoft settlements

Monday, January 20, 2003
The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) will meet next Tuesday with executives from Microsoft Taiwan Corp. to negotiate an "administrative settlement" in the panel's probe into Microsoft's alleged monopolistic and unfair trade practices.

FTC officials said on Thursday that Microsoft Taiwan had received the settlement proposals returned by the committee last Friday. The FTC also attached its major requests concerning adjustments to the prices of Microsoft software products, the protection of consumers' interests, after-sales service and the lifting of restrictions on competition from other software houses.

The officials said they understood that Microsoft Taiwan had consulted with the head office of Microsoft Corp. in Seattle in its preparation for the upcoming meeting. In order to reach an "administrative settlement" before the deadline of Feb. 27 set by the FTC and to prevent possible foot-dragging by Microsoft in the complicated legal case, the committee decided to hold two consultation meetings with Microsoft executives on Tuesday and Friday.

Consumers group in Taiwan have renewed their calls for the FTC to resist the powerful lobbying efforts of the American software giant and protect the large number of computer users in Taiwan.
