Motorola raise capex for much needed capacity

Thursday, January 23, 2003
Motorola Inc. executives addressing a conference call today said that the company's semiconductor products sector (SPS) would increase capital expenditure by more than 50% from the 2002 figure to spend $350 million in 2003.

The company said it spent just $220 million on capital expenditure in 2002. However such a major raise in spending may still not put Motorola SPS in the top twenty of chip makers ranked by capital expenditure, emphasizing the fab-lite strategy the company is adopting.

The company said it would continue cost reductions within SPS in the first-half of 2003, generally taken to mean job cuts even though it is predicting a 10% rise in the size of the semiconductor market in 2003 compared with 2002.

Motorola also said that TCL Communications, China's locally headquartered handset manufacturer had selected Motorola's wireless chipset architecture. The company did not say whether TCL's decision was exclusive of other chip vendors.
