Who won the microprocessor war in 2002? Advanced Micro Devices Inc. gained market share in the x86-based microprocessor race in the fourth quarter of 2002, but the company lost ground to archrival Intel Corp. last year, according to a report from CIBC World Markets Inc. here today.
Intel's worldwide market share in the processor business increased from 78.3% in terms of unit volumes in 2001, to 82.5% in 2002, according to CIBC. In comparison, AMD's market share fell from 21.7% in 2001, to 17.5% in 2002, according to CIBC.
In terms of worldwide revenues, Intel's market share increased from 88.7% in 2001, to 91.8% in 2002, according to CIBC. In contrast, AMD's share fell from 11.3% in 2001, to 8.2% in 2002, according to the Toronto-based investment banking firm.
There was some good news for AMD. Intel's unit share dropped from 86.4% in Q3 of 2002, to 83% in Q4. Its revenue share also fell from 95.8% in Q3 of 2002, to 92.5%, the report said.
AMD's share jumped from 13.6% in terms of units for the third quarter of 2002, to 17% in the fourth quarter of last year, according to the firm. Its revenue share jumped from 5.2% in Q3 of 2002, to 7.5% in Q4.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company, however, benefited from what CIBC called an inventory reduction program during the fourth quarter, where AMD unloaded its processors in the channels.
And AMD's share in Q4 was below Q2 of last year. At the time, AMD's share was 18% and 7.6% in terms of units and dollars, respectively, the report said.
