Samsung Electronics said that its goal is to step up to become the world's biggest flash memory chip supplier this year.
The company, which currently holds the position as the biggest manufacturer in the NAND flash memory chip sector, said it will penetrate into the NOR flash memory chip market, which consists of 80% of the world's flash chip market.
"We recently succeeded in developing 64Mb and 128Mb NOR flash chips," a company official said, adding it will expand production facilities for the chips, which stood at an annual 3 million units in 2002, to a monthly 5 million units and an annual 60 million this year.
The company said it hopes sales of flash memory chips swing to US$15 billion this year, which will be nearly four times the amount it saw last year.
