Advanced Micro Devices today announced its fastest 32-bit microprocessor for higher-end servers.
AMD next Monday will also unveil its fastest desktop Athlon XP processor, which is expected to be rated at 2800+. Code-named Barton, the new desktop MPU will be the first AMD chip to use 0.13-micron process technology.
Today's new processor, dubbed the Athlon MP 2600+, is a 32-bit, 2.13-GHz chip designed for multiprocessors, workstations and servers. It incorporates AMD's QuantiSpeed superscaler architecture, which also features a pipelined floating unit, hardware data pre-fetch, and exclusive and speculative translation look-aside buffers. The MP 2600+ processor is $273, in 1,000-unit lots.
AMD appears to be extending the life of its 32-bit processor line amid delays with its 64-bit chips. Last week, it gave dates for the launch of its family of 64-bit Hammer microprocessors, disclosing that its next-generation desktop processor would be delayed by several months.
Additionally, AMD is still a small player in the server-based processor market, but it is making some inroads in the arena.
AMD disclosed that workstations based on its Athlon MP processors are being used to develop the special effects for the new Star Wars trilogy films.
