Advanced Micro Devices on Monday, as expected, introduced its Athlon XP 3000+ processor, code-named Barton, with 640Kbytes of on-die cache.
AMD claimed that the new MPU is the highest-performance desktop PC processor in the industry, a point Intel Corp. immediately disputed. The top Intel desktop Pentium 4 runs at 3.06GHz with 512Mbye on-die L2 cache. The Athlon XP 3000+ performance rating is based on AMD benchmark tests audited by Price Waterhouse Cooper.
The new processor is immediately available in NEC desktops sold in Europe. AMD said it will be in systems shortly from other PC makers.
The 640Kbyte on-die cache is 70% greater than other Athlon XP processors. This includes 512Kbytes of L2 cache, double the level of earlier Athlon XP versions. Analysts said the higher on-die cache gives a major performance boost to processors.
The Athlon XP 3000+ is priced at $588 in 1,000-unit quantities.
