VLSI Research Inc. said today that the market for components and critical subsystems used in semiconductor and related manufacturing equipment will have grown by 11.4 percent, or $840 million, this quarter over Q4 2002.
The market will grow even more in Q2, despite a weak market for equipment, according to the San Jose based market research company. Critical subsystems will grow 26 percent next quarter over the current one, VLSI said.
However demand will slow down in the second half, when equipment suppliers expect to see orders grow for their equipment. Second half revenue for the critical subsystems will be flat with the first half of the year, making it a $3.9 billion market on the year, according to VLSI. That would give the market a 12 percent growth increase over 2001, but still $46 percent off the peak year of 2000
Growing demand for 300mm process tools is an important factor in this growth since critical subsystems for 300mm tools are generally higher value, VLSI said.
Critical subsystems address specific applications and processes, typically providing the primary delivery and control of process variables such as gases, liquids, power, vacuum, temperature and optics, VLSI noted. In many cases these are supplied as integrated subsystems comprising one or more individual subsystems plus other components.
